This weeks recipe is a Keto German Chocolate Mug Cake! This is a very easy recipe to make, and the beauty of mug cakes is the portion control aspect of it. If you struggle with self control or over indulging when you make a large full size dessert, then mug cakes will be great.
There’s just something about a mug cake. For those nights when your sweet tooth is calling you but you don’t want to commit to a full dessert (Or a messy kitchen, LOL), a personal cake just makes sense. The best part about mug cakes is that they’re all technically no bake desserts, since you pop them in the microwave… You cut your “baking time“ to about a minute. Additionally you likely have all the ingredients in your pantry already.
When you get that late night or after dinner craving….Or what if others are enjoying dessert? This chocolate mug cake IS FOR YOU!
Seriously though, if you’ve been following this lifestyle for a while you may think that you have tried all the mug cakes there are, but stop right there… I promise you this isn’t like any other mug cake out there. If you don’t try this one, you are 100% missing out!
This show stopping German chocolate cake has a gooey coconut and toasted pecan frosting, which normally is made with evaporated milk… Our recipe is much more simple, but equally delicious. And who can forget about that dark and super moist chocolate cake. Get ready to indulge in the best chocolate cake on the planet.
WHAT IS GERMAN CHOCOLATE CAKE?
The name German chocolate cake is a little deceiving, as it is not technically a German dessert. Traditionally the cake is a lighter colored cake with a mild chocolate taste and the entire cake is usually covered in coconut pecan frosting. It was actually named after Samuel German, the man who invented the sweet dark chocolate for Baker’s chocolate company.
So the cake isn’t “German” as in the country, it’s “German” as in the chocolate creators name.
Our recipe is a two step process, but neither step is complicated.
We begin with making our frosting and letting it cool and thicken while preparing our cake.
A few tips :
Toasting the coconut makes an amazing difference to this cake. It’s a straightforward process. Warm a dry pan to medium heat placing a single layer of unsweetened shredded coconut in your pan. Toasting and light browning will happen very quickly so keep an eye it. Your toasted coconut can be stored for use at a later time.
It’s really crucial when making a mug cake not to over bake the cake. Err on the side of slightly under done. Like most traditional cakes, mug cakes continue to bake slightly when removed from their heat source. Get familiar with your microwave, you can always add a few seconds, but nobody likes the intense rubberiness that can happen with an over cooked cake.
And lastly….definitely consider using our butter roasted pecans for this recipe. They are mouth watering and really put this dessert on another level.

Well this recipe was really simple and we love that about it. I also love the portion control aspect of it, because its easy to over do even Keto foods. The test version of this was good, although the frosting was a bit runny. So we figured out that you really should make your frosting first and allow it to thicken as it sets. All and all this was a great tasting mug cake that we both enjoyed. We think you will also.

Keto German Chocolate Mug Cake
Coconut Frosting Ingredients
- 3 TB heavy cream
- 1 TB natural sweetener I used sukrin gold
- 1 TB toasted unsweetened coconut
- 3 or 4 chopped pecans
Coconut Frosting Instructions
- In a small microwave safe bowl, heat the heavy cream and sweetener for one minute. Stir well, return to microwave for another minute and 15 seconds.
- Stir well, return to microwave for another minute and 15 seconds.
- Remove carefully stirring well. Add toasted coconut and chopped pecans. Allow to cool while preparing cake.
Chocolate Mug Cake
- Combine wet ingredients stirring well, add cocoa
powder, natural sweetener, flour, and baking powder stirring and scraping sides of mug until a smooth batter is achieved. Let cool.
- Microwave between 45-60 seconds, using least amount
of time possible to prevent cake dryness.
- Add cooled coconut pecan frosting. Enjoy.
