This weeks recipe is Keto Philly Cheesesteak Casserole!  This is easy to make keto friendly casserole does a great job of capture the classic flavors of a traditional Philly Cheesesteak but without all the carbs. We hope you enjoy it!

Philly cheesesteak casserole is a quick and easy dinner idea that is inspired by the classic East Coast sandwich. This simple version takes all of the best flavors from a cheesesteak sandwich and packs them into a family friendly casserole.

This has the comforting flavors of the original sandwich, but is ready under an hour… Here I’m combining the traditional flavors of steak and cheese, plus onions peppers and mushrooms… This comforting week night dinner is something that the whole family can enjoy.

A traditional Philly cheesesteak sandwich is a classic. It has lots of thinly shaved steak and a good amount of cheese… Traditionally cheesesteak sandwiches also come with sautéed onions and peppers… It is usually served up on a hoagie roll… But because I’m trying to keep things low carb I have eliminated that. Of course your carb eating family members could always serve their casserole in some form of bread if desired.

The key to a cheesesteak sandwich, is to have steak that is very thinly sliced. Choose a ribeye or sirloin, I used a combination of both in this recipe. If you use a very sharp knife to cut the steak against the grain, it should be tender. Cutting against the grain shortens the muscle fibers and makes the steak a lot more tender… I also let mine marinate in olive oil and garlic to further tenderize it.

Philly cheese steaks traditionally use American or provolone cheese. You do want a cheese that melts smoothly and gives great flavor. I used a combination of both but use whatever you like.

As with most American classic foods… The true origins of this sandwich are a bit fuzzy, Philadelphians Pat and Henry Olivieri are often credited with inventing the sandwich by serving chopped steak on an Italian roll in the early 1930s. they originally owned a hotdog stand, but on one occasion decided to make a new sandwich using chopped beef and grilled onions… The sandwich was originally prepared without cheese, and it is thought that provolone cheese was first added by a man named Joe Lorenza,… Cheesesteaks have become popular at restaurants and food carts throughout the city of Philadelphia and then many locations in other states. CJ himself has food memories of eating delicious cheesesteak sandwiches in Washington D.C., where he grew up.

FOLLOW-UP TASTE TEST by C.J.

So I’m fortunate enough to always get to try and experience new keto/low carb dishes.   99.99% of them are absolutely delicious and this is one of my new favorites.  As Sarah mentioned I do have found memories of Philly Cheesesteaks from growing up in Washington D.C. Somehow in High School I was introduced to the Philly Cheesesteak from a certain little restaurant up on Martin Luther King Avenue. This place was probably 2 or 3 miles from my house, and I’d save my money up from cutting grass and occasionally jump on my 10 speed bike and go and get a Philly Cheesesteak, it was really a treat for me to have them from time to time.  This recipe really does capture the Philly Cheesesteak flavors but of course it doesn’t have the bun.  I think one of the keys to making this recipe is your choice of steak, which cut you use and how thinly sliced it is.  Just like most casseroles, this was better the next day.  This probably in my top five Keto Casserole recipes that we’ve done at Cjsketokitchen.  We hope that you and your family enjoy the recipe!   Don’t forget you can share photos or your creations over in the Facebook Group or on Pinterest.

  1. I haven’t yet tried your Philly Cheesesteak casserole, but as someone who was born & raised in Philly I want to say thanks in advance! I plan to try it soon. Judging by the way CJ was eating the trial serving, I’m quite sure it’s going to be good!

      1. 5 stars
I made the Cheese steak casserole. I agree with CJ – it tasted very much like a cheese steak without the roll. Thank you again!
