Here are the six tips we discussed:

  • Plan Ahead: It’s always advisable to plan, especially with dietary restrictions. Most social eating situations, both business and personal, are not surprises, allowing time to check menus online and consider ordering options that fit a keto lifestyle.
  • Choose Hotels with Hot Breakfast Options: When traveling, opting for hotels that offer hot breakfasts often means access to keto-friendly foods like eggs, sausage, and bacon, as opposed to carb-heavy continental breakfast items.
  • Remember You’re in Control and Modifications Are Expected: Don’t be shy about asking for meal modifications. Many people have dietary restrictions or allergies, so establishments are generally prepared to accommodate requests. You are a paying customer, and they are there to serve you. Food choices have also gotten more varied as time has gone by.
  • Wait to Eat or Eat Ahead of Time: If you’re concerned about finding keto-friendly options at an event, you can choose to eat before you go or wait until afterward. In social settings, simply having a drink like tea, coffee, or bottled water can allow you to still socialize without eating.
  • Bring Your Own Food or a Keto-Friendly Dish: This is a great strategy for family events or potlucks. We recommend bringing a keto dish you enjoy, but warn that others, even those not doing keto, often rapidly consume these dishes because they taste so good. LOL.
  • Pick the Lesser of Two Evils: In situations where ideal keto options aren’t available, choose the best possible alternative. For example, a vegetable tray with ranch dressing (even if the dressing isn’t perfectly keto) is a better choice than cake or donuts.

We want to emphasize that keto is forgiving, and sometimes you can only do the best you can do!
