Lately CJ and have re-found our love of Celestial Seasonings Bengal spice tea……it’s a tea brimming with Indian flavors. I have always preferred spice cake above all others.



This Chai mug Cake is a special treat for chai tea lovers. Packed with fragrant spices and paired with a simple cream cheese and ginger frosting.

Mug cakes may not be as perfect as bake-in-the-oven cakes, but I say they’re the second-best thing. Because when you’re looking for a dessert that is delicious and quick to make, then a mug cake is perfect.  Plus, portion control. Win-win!!



Typical chai spices include ground cinnamon, ground ginger, ground allspice, ground cloves, ground nutmeg, PLUS ground cardamom.

Standard pumpkin pie spice includes ground cinnamon, ground ginger, ground allspice, ground cloves, and ground nutmeg, so you could use it instead.

I really feel cardamom is essential, and I found it with no problem on my grocery store shelf.



I chose to amp up my flavors with the addition of star anise and extra cardamom.


So what is chai?

Masala chai ( lit. ’mixed-spice tea’) is a tea beverage made by boiling black tea in milk and water with a mixture of aromatic herbs and spices. Originating in India, the beverage has gained worldwide popularity, becoming a feature in many coffee and tea houses.


According to stories, it originates from modern India and said that the king created masala chai as an ayurvedic energizing and refreshing beverage


I topped my cake with fresh ginger icing. The flavor of fresh ginger is slightly peppery and sweet with a spicy aroma. It pairs beautifully with this cake, and I highly recommend it. You can omit if you don’t care for ginger. Simple whipped cream will substitute.

This mug cake was delicious!  Seriously it might be my new favorite.  It was very flavorful and somehow had sort of a caramelized crust texture that was very satisfying.  You will not be disappointed with this mug cake and as mentioned earlier mug cakes are great for portion control.

Keto Chai Latte Mug Cake

Fresh Ginger Frosting


  • Combine melted butter, and sweetener. Stir until thoroughly combined. Add spices. Combine again.
  • Add flour and baking powder. Mix to combine. Add egg. Scrape the bottom well.
  • Microwave for approximately 60 seconds. Adjust time for various microwaves. Heat by seconds until just barely set. Do not over cook.
  • Top with frosting if desired.

Frosting instructions:

  • Combine soft cream cheese, powdered sweetener, and vanilla. Add fresh ginger. Top mug cake. Serve immediately.
